Overview
The Volkswagen Schwimmwagen Type 166 Wide Wheel Version is recreated in this detailed 1/35 scale plastic model kit, offering a variant of the well-known German amphibious vehicle used during World War II. Designed to complement existing Schwimmwagen kits, this version introduces wider tyres and additional equipment, reflecting field modifications that enhanced off-road capability.
Developed by the German Wehrmacht to operate effectively across Europe’s rivers and wetlands, the Schwimmwagen was based on the Ferdinand Porsche-designed Kübelwagen. Powered by a 4-cylinder gasoline engine producing 25hp, it could reach speeds of up to 80km/h on land. Its amphibious capability came from a manually lowered three-bladed propeller, enabling water speeds of up to 10km/h. While many examples used narrower tyres due to material shortages, this wide wheel version with 200mm tyres provided improved traction in difficult terrain.
This model kit captures these features with newly moulded parts and finely rendered mechanical details. The suspension, engine, and additional equipment are accurately depicted, while optional accessories and included figures allow for a customised display. The result is a versatile and historically grounded model suitable for diorama use or standalone display.
