Overview
The British Rail Class 47 model R30440 Railfreight Distribution Class 47 Co-Co 47306 ‘The Sapper’ is a detailed OO gauge representation of a well-known diesel-era locomotive. Finished in the distinctive Railfreight Distribution livery, it reflects the operational appearance of this versatile freight locomotive during its later service life. The model incorporates refined detailing, including separately fitted plastic buffers and NEM coupling pockets, enhancing both realism and compatibility with modern layouts.
Designed for flexibility, the model is equipped with a 21-pin DCC decoder socket, allowing straightforward conversion to digital control. This makes it suitable for both traditional analogue layouts and advanced DCC systems, providing modellers with greater operational control and functionality.
The original locomotive was part of the large fleet of Class 47s built by Brush Traction at Loughborough and by British Rail at Crewe Works. Entering service in 1964 as D1787 at Tinsley, it was widely used on freight duties before being renumbered 47306 in 1974. Later becoming part of the EWS fleet in 1997, it carried the Railfreight Distribution livery and the name “The Sapper.” Withdrawn in 1999, it was eventually preserved at the Bodmin Railway, where it has been restored to working condition.
