Hornby 1/76 BR Battle of Britain Class Rebuilt 303 Squadron 34053 R30485

Overview
The SR Battle of Britain Class locomotive ‘303 Squadron’ is an OO gauge model that reflects both railway heritage and historical commemoration. Based on the locomotive originally built as 21C153 ‘Sir Keith Park’, this model captures the distinctive design of Oliver Bulleid**, featuring the innovative air-smoothed casing, three-cylinder configuration, and chain-driven valve gear enclosed within an oil bath.

Constructed in 1947 at Brighton Works for the Southern Railway, the locomotive was later rebuilt under R.G. Jarvis to a more conventional form. This rebuild removed the air-smoothed casing and introduced Walschaerts valve gear, reflecting evolving maintenance and operational requirements. The locomotive remained in service until its withdrawal in 1965 before being rescued from Barry scrapyard and restored to operational condition by Southern Locomotives Ltd.

In 2024, the locomotive was temporarily renamed ‘303 Squadron’ at the Spa Valley Railway**, commemorating the Polish fighter unit that served with distinction during the Battle of Britain. The model includes practical features such as sprung metal buffers, NEM tension lock couplings, and compatibility with HM7000 digital control systems via a 21-pin decoder (sold separately).
